Independent café serving Maldon with love
A Heybridge resident and mum of five, Nadine never thought she would have the time or money to open her own café. But after spending five years as an NHS responder, she was inspired to do something special for her community.
It started with giving out free meals to the elderly at Christmas. "I was absolutely petrified to open," Nadine admits, "but I thought you only live once – let's go and do this. I'm so excited to make it work and do everything I can."
The café opened its doors in April 2025, and the response from the community has been overwhelming. "Everybody says it's my lovely nature as I'm so welcoming," Nadine shares. "They also love the food, its fantastic prices, and nearly every single review says the staff are so friendly and welcoming."

The Millwood Café opened in April 2025 on Mill Road in Maldon, Essex. The name combines our location on Mill Road with the building's first-ever owner, James Wood – a perfect blend of past and present.
From our signature full English breakfasts and popular breakfast wraps to our carefully crafted burgers, massive jacket potatoes, and "excellent" coffee and cake, every dish is made with care using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. We believe in supporting our local community and providing a light and airy space where everyone feels at home.
We're open Monday-Saturday from 8:30am-4pm and Sunday from 9am-2pm, with breakfast served until 12:30pm every day. Our café can seat 24 guests inside with additional seating outside, and we're also available for event bookings including birthday parties and family gatherings.
Every Monday, we have a kindness jar with kindness notes – because at The Millwood Café, we're not just about great food, we're about creating a warm, welcoming community where everyone is valued.
